American Idol - Week 4

Last night I got home from work late, a little after 9p, and as such missed the "live (except on the West Coast)" airing of American Idol. Thankfully I have a DVR!! This week it became even more significant as I was able to fast-forward through most of the performances. Ugh...who in their right mind thought up show-tunes as a way to show off vocal range or dexterity? It just didn't work for me!!! On a positive note though, Paula seemed to have been a little less hopped up on the 3 Vs that are her staple...vodka/valium/vicodin. Still, she gets awfully happy for even the worst performances. Thankfully we have Randy, who decided to "keep it real" this week and Simon, who was his loveable self...as always. I personally enjoyed Nikko, Carrie and Vonzelle. I probably would have enjoyed Bo a bit more...but let's be honest, he was not ever meant to be singing show tunes.

On another note, I'm super sorry to see Jessica sent packing last week. It was the opinion of my household that Anwar should be the one sent home. He may have the most technically perfect voice, but his performances always leave me cold...plus that hair...make it go away. Last week was difficult to pick...this week should be easier...

And so, without further babble, here's my recap:

Scott Savol - The Impossible Dream (Man of La Mancha)

Well, he's consistenly managed to stay out of the bottom three...up til now. Unfortunately, his performance, unlike his weight, was just "thin" (as Simon said). Couple that with all the press he had this past week regarding his misdemeanor charges and I'm afraid it's going to be tough, tough, tough for him to skip the bottom 3. I do think, because he's been so good in the past, he may squeak by.

Constantine Maroulis - My Funny Valentine (Babes in Arms)
Ok, so Randy, Paula and apparently even Simon think this guy is better suited to be a crooner. Doesn't matter...I still think he sucks! I wish he would go home...but he won't...so I'm not saying any more about him!

Carrie Underwood - Hello, Young Lovers (The King and I)

Boring song, awesome delivery. She's really my odds on for winning. Who'd have thunk it that I would get all gaga over a little country girl from Oklahoma...hmmmm...apparently I am my father's son after all!

Vonzell Solomon - People (Funny Girl)

When I saw what she was going to perform I thought, geez that's an odd choice. Cute little black girl from Florida trying to pull off Barbara Streisand. Turns out this girl can sing whatever the heck she wants to sing. Last week she hit notes Whitney Houston didn't know existed and last night she hit notes ole Funny Girl herself couldn't sniff out...even with that nose. To use a line of Paula's which she so carelessly threw out to Constantine..."I'm starting to fall in love with you!"

Anthony Federov - Climb Every Mountain (The Sound of Music)

Cute face, awesome blue eyes, amazing story aren't enough to propel this boy up the mountain he's facing this week. I'm afraid that he's my pick of the week to go home!

Nikko Smith - One Hand, One Heart (West Side Story)

Even starting out a little shaky (obviously showtunes aren't this R&B guys thing), he put together an awesome performance. Paula has taken to calling him the "comeback kid"...amazingly he just keeps getting better and better. He's in my top three for the night's performances.

Anwar Robinson - If Ever I Would Leave You (Camelot)

I wish he would leave so I could be put out of my misery. What's with him and cameras? Anytime one is pointed in his direction he gives it a quick little fly by, then refuses to make anymore eye contact with it...eyes all scurrying around like he's just seen a ghost...something's fishy. And his choice of outfits are consistently suspect. Sure he is hardly ever off-key (ok, well last week finding a note was almost like finding a needle in all that hair on his head)...but isn't there more to being an American Idol than being "technically perfect"?

Bo Bice - from the 1972 musical Pippen

Ummmm yeah, "if I'm being real here" (thanks for the help Randy), this was not one of his better performances...not even close. Then again, even his worst performances outshine the two A's (Anthony and Anwar)!!

Nadia Turner - As Long As He Needs Me (Oliver)

Dang, was she all sultry and sexy this week or what?! Plus she did a pretty good job on the number. No need to start packing what must be mountains of hair product yet...she'll be around to sing another day!!

There ain't much to say after the week except to repeat Simon...please don't let "Ryan Seacrest...pick the show's themes any more."
