Lesson #4: You Gotta Have a Hook!

Lisa Tucker

My bottom 3 included Tucker, but what a shock to see the one and only McPheever inducer as the second lowest vote getter. Heck...even Pickler and Bucky got more votes. I'm confused and then some. However, we did get it right this week when it came to Tucker. I've been calling for her ouster for a long time because, even though the Professor may be right, she just hasn't been a star. Her personality has lagged and her performances just haven't impressed. I guess that's the thing...when you get to Hollywood, you need a hook and unfortunately for Tucker, she just didn't have one.

My advice for Ms. Tucker: Broadway Baby!!!

Indulgent

So here's the deal, I'm not even sure I should be giving a wrap up of this week's performances. The reason: with the exception of two of the performances, they sucked. Simon used the word indulgent twice (maybe more). If last night was to show that these up-and-coming "stars" could hang with the big boys and girls, then we were sadly disappointed. Instead they chose to sing songs that they liked and didn't even do that very well. Perhaps they were a bit over-confident coming off of last week...but dang y'all...what a waste! Indulgent? Yes...once again, Simon was dead on. Funny thing, even fawning Paula couldn't find a lot good to say...even about the favorites. Thankfully the show closed with one solid performance...opps, not totally solid...that dancing was awful, but otherwise, if last night was the biggee...I'd give the crown either to the girl who gives a whole lot of us McPheever or...Elliott, even if he looks like he could be Backyard BBQ Idol or My Favorite Karoke Bar Idol!

Because last night sucked, I'll keep the reviews short...here goes...

Lisa Tucker – Because of You

The Professor keeps saying she's got a great performance in the que. Problem is, I think she won't be around to pull it off. The odds are against her: (i) first up; (ii) consistently in the bottom 3; and (iii) crappy performance of a song I like. C-YA!

Kellie Pickler – Suds in a Bucket

Boring! They didn't even allow her to put the Pickler personality on display. Thankfully! Because honestly, I'm a little tired of it! On a positive note...her make-up artist obviously took the hints of many, many people (including the Professor) and toned down the spackle!

Ace Young – Drops of Jupiter

So you've got a permanent scar on your perfectly chisled chest and it got Paula hot and bothered. Big Woo!! You sucked last night and no amount of smoldering looks can change that. Bottom 3 once again!

Taylor Hicks – Trouble

If a woman gave me that much Trouble, you can be darn sure I wouldn't be standing in one place on the stage looking a bit constipated. Granted, it was kind of cool to see that Hicks can actually stand still...but at the same time, it felt like something was missing!

Mandisa – Wanna Praise You

I expecte more! I love this song by Mary Mary and apparently so does Ms. disa, even saying she had performed it a ton of times in church. I don't think she did very well and for once I actually wanted to turn something I really love (the song and Mandisa) off.

Chris Daughtry– What If

What if that performance actually landed this guy in the bottom 3? It was too much! Seriously! I think the Professor's comments from last week were starting to be echoed with the judges this week. Incredibly indulgent indeed!

Katharine McPhee – The Voice Within

She looked amazing! She sounded pretty dang good comparatively. Heck, she even sounded a lot like Ms. Aquilara herself. This hottie who ilicits McPheever in so many of us, didn't turn down the heat this week...then again, she didn't turn it up either.

Bucky Covington – Real Good Man

Well, what to say about this performance? It wasn't necessarily bad. It wasn't particularly good. Is it enough to keep him around? Hard to say! However, I think, given Lisa's placement and her consistently bad performances, Bucky might get a repreive. Then again, last week I quite naturally assumed she would go away...

Paris Bennett – Work It Out

I know I'm supposed to like this particular Beyonce song, but it's not one of my favorites. If I was Paris I would have chosen any one of the other Beyonce songs that would have more naturally showcased her voice and allowed some fun and dance moves. This song didn't really do it for me...but, as Randy often says "you worked it out!"

Elliott Yamin – I Don't Wanna Be

Elliott doesn't have the look! He doesn't really have the moves. But dang, the boy's got the voice! Such a quandry to put us all in! Shall we be shallow and judge on looks or shall we overlook them understanding that braces and a touch up here or there could make him look like we really want him too? I know what we are supposed to do...but...

Kevin Covais aka Squishy aka Chicken Little

Well, CK, you made your dad proud! I'm equally proud to be able to say you are outta here!

Melissa McGhee

She’s gone…gone…gone…and I miss her! She was sexy, sultry and a whole host of other descriptive “s’s”…but you guys booted her, damn you!

My bottom three includes at least 5 of the performers last night. I know, I know...mathmatically impossible you say...but...having said that, I think that this will in fact be the week we finally bid adieu to Ms. Tucker. Right up until she made the final 12 she's been loved...either we stopped loving her OR she just hasn't stepped up to the plate. Either way, we are left consistently disappointed in her performances. It even seemed that she's starting to affect the other contestants.

Well y'all, just reliving last night was a drag! Watch tonight though...Shakira, that rump shaking Latina hottie will be performing. Heck, I'll watch for no other reason!
