American Idol - Week 5

And so, I've just finished viewing, for the second time, last night's performances on AI. Some were pretty good while at least one, just SUCKED!! One person redeemed themselves and one showed that, well, they are destined to be doing musical theater...quite well! It was very sad for me to know that the comeback kid, Nikko, is no longer gracing us with his presence. However, I have a feeling that we'll see more of him in the near future!!

This week, Anthony Federov made me proud by singing one of my favorite songs. When I was 15 or so, Top 40 music was still outlawed in my household. Mom and dad were traveling, as they often did, and I was staying with a family friend who owned a car lot. As there was no school, I trooped down to the car lot with our friend. I spent most of the day hanging out in an older Lincoln Town Car listening to the Top 40 station. Paul Young's song, Everytime You Go Away was hot and I fell in love with it. Everytime I listen I still recall thinking how everytime my parents left on a trip, they took a piece of me with them. Of course, my activities were reported and a phone call made. I was instructed to "cease and desists"...ahhh...the good old days! Big ups to Anthony for singing one of my favorites...and doing it well!!!

On another note, Randy joined Paul this week in saying that Anwar has the most technically perfect voice in the competition. I repeat from last week...technically perfect does NOT make an American Idol!! I think a luxury cruise ship suits him best!!

Well, enough of the blather...let's get to the good stuff...

Nadia Turner - When I Dream

Poor Nadia...she chose a boring song AND was first in the pecking order. While I thought she sounded good, and let's be honest...she looked damn good, I'm afraid her positioning and the song choice could very well be her undoing!!

Bo Bice - Freebird

Ok...how many of you guys thought Simon must have been sucking on the crack pipe based on that comment...as if no one has every heard of Freebird! DUH!! Bogart is a rocker and he does it well!! He's not quite as high up on my list of favorites as he used to be...but he's good!!!

Anwar Robinson - I'll Never Love This Way Again

Technically perfect does NOT an American Idol make!! Who likes this guy...and more importantly...why?

Anthony Federov - Every Time You Go Away

Apparently someone has been taking Simon's comments to heart! Is it just me, or does he sound like a white Jon Secada? Anyway...mad props for singing a song I love!!! Bigger props for turning his lagging image around!! Hopefully that little performance will keep him around for another week!!

Vonzell Solomon - Let's Hear It For The Boy

Ok, watching Vonzell perform is rather like watching a flower bloom! It's been a beautiful thing to behold! However, I'm thinking, as I listen again to this cute little Florida girl, that I'm not quite sure her vocals are as strong as her stage presence. Actually, listen without watching and she is ALL over the place...what's the word the judges love so much..."pitchy!"

Scott Savol - She's Gone

Does it take big cajones to try to pull off a Hall and Oates song with them in the audience...or is it sheer stupidity? Maybe a combination! I personally thought he SUCKED!!! And what was with Randy and Paula fawning ALL over him. Thankfully we had Simon to keep us real..."there were more bum notes than good notes!" While I've been a big Scott fan, I think this week he needs to go home. If it was up to me, I would have sent him home last week and kept Nikko on...but alas someone, somewhere must really like him. I wonder the wisdom in singing a song about leaving when you are down at the bottom.

Carrie Underwood - Love is a Battlefield

I could care less that Simon thought it was like a "kitten trying to be a tiger"...I love this girl. Heck, she even looked like a rocker chick...ok, she looked like a country chick looking like a rocker chick (did I loose you...sorry...), but, wow!! Maybe not one of her best performances...but we all know...she's already won this one!!

Constantine Maroulis - Bohemian Rhapsody

WOW!! Was not a Constantine fan, and may still not be...but heavens to betsy! What a way to end the show!! Constantine has all the showman elements that Anwar is missing. Maybe that's why I'm really starting to like this guy. His voice may not be "technically perfect" but he knows how to work his audience!! I could watch that again and again (oh wait...I did)!

Tonight's results are a little hard to pick for me. I think a toss up between Nadia and Scott. I hope that it's Scott who makes his departure...we are loosing too many girls! Don't forget to vote y'all!!! It's the only way we can get rid of the riff-raff!!! And with that...I'm out!
